Moving to a home is itself a hectic and long process but particularly when moving to a smaller house it is important to have some tips and ideas before moving to a smaller home. Following are some tips:

Take checklist of your belongings:

It is a natural thing that when you are moving to a smaller home, you will not have a large space for all your previous items which you have kept in the previous home from many years. Before you pack up, you need to check out your belongings.

As you sort out the things, you have to separate the things which you rarely use from those things which you really need. If there are some items which you haven’t used from many years then you must clear out those things. The reason of this downsizing is to keep your life simple by getting rid of things which are less important or not important at all.

Look out the items in each room and reduce the duplicate items:

As you look through your items. You need an organized system to keep the necessary belongings. It is recommended to use a “Three box method” that encourages you to take a choice item by item. Collect three boxes and label them as “keep”, “Get rid of”, and “Put in storage”.

First of all, you should take the important items from each room and put in “Keep” box, you can also label it as it will also be easy when you will unpack and move in your new home.

Do away with the items which are no more needed or which you haven’t used them for years, it is time to keep them in “Get rid of” box.  Seasonal and affectionate items should be kept in “Put in storage” box and keep it in neat place for later use.

Once you have decided which items you are not taking into your new home then you have multiple options to do away with these items like selling, donating, turn it into something useful, give it to loved ones or simply rent a dumpster because not all items will be good enough to sell or donate.

Buy small furniture or hold back to buy new furniture:

As you are moving into a new home it is obvious that you will like to buy some new furniture for your new home but you have to keep in mind the size and available space of your home before buying new things. If the things or necessary to buy then try to buy the smaller size of the items which can occupy less space. Or you should wait until you move to your new home and have an idea about its area.

You should also avoid to buy and keep duplicate things in your home. As it is not beneficial to keep two items at a time and your home will look messy too. So, only keep the useful things.
